Home treatment is all that is needed to cure and prevent other problems such as infection. Burns affect people of all ages, although some are at greater risk than others.
Burns and severity
About 20% of burns occur in children under 5 years old, and most of these are scald burns from hot liquids.
About 60% of burns occur in 18 – to 64 years old.
About 10% of burns occur in older adults, burns and scalds mostly hot liquids.
Men are twice as likely to have burn injuries as women.
Doctors assess the severity of the burn by estimating the percentage area of the body being burned. Special Letters are used to indicate the percentage the surface of the body include various body parts. For example, in an adult, the group constitutes approximately 9% of the body.
Treatment of Burns
Treatment depends on what kind of burn you have. If the first or second degree burn covers an area of more than 2 to 3 inches in diameter, or is on its face, hands, feet or genitals, you should consult a doctor immediately. Third degree burns require emergency medical attention. Babies and young children may have a more severe reaction from a burn than an adult. A burn in an adult may cause a minor loss of body fluids, but in an infant or child small, the same size and depth of a burn can cause severe fluid loss.
The first step in managing a person with a burn is to stop the burning process. With dry powder burns, the powder should be brushed to OFF. With burns, the affected area should be rinsed with a large amount of water cleaned to remove foreign bodies and help stop the burning process. Cold water should never be applied to any person with extensive burns, as may severely compromise the burn temperature status of the victim.
Block access to the kitchen as much as possible.
Never let a child use a walker in the kitchen.
Avoid using tablecloths or large placemats. A toddler can pull them and end with a hot drink or plate of food.
Keep hot from severe burns may take hours to develop. The longer the complication is present, the most serious are the problems that tend to cause. Young children and older adults tend to be more seriously affected by complications than other age groups. Hospitalization is sometimes necessary for the care optimal burn injuries. For example, raising an arm or leg with severe burns above heart level to prevent swelling is more easily accommodated in a hospital. Furthermore, the burns that prevent a person from performing the essential functions of every day, like walking or eating, make it necessary to hospitalization.
