So I just learned you have high cholesterol and have been told to start a Low Fat Diet lower cholesterol immediately. But what does this mean? In case of eliminating all high cholesterol foods or eliminate all fats? No and no. Read on to learn about common myths of a low-cholesterol diet low in fat.

Myth # 1 of a low cholesterol low fat diet

Focus on the cholesterol content

Most people think that lowering cholesterol, they need to reduce cholesterol intake. Dietary cholesterol (the cholesterol you consume) has nothing to do with their level of serum cholesterol. The two main culprits that raise serum cholesterol are saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fat is high in foods such as fatty cuts of meat, bacon and sausages and strong sources of fat such as butter and lard. Trans fats are found in many packaged products including but not limited to ramen noodles, biscuit mix, cookies and especially in fast food.

Myth # 2 from a low cholesterol low fat diet

Eliminate all fatty foods

Whether or not fat is good in a low-cholesterol low fat diet is very dependent on the type of fat. While foods rich in saturated fats or trans fats are a no-no, Foods rich in polyunsaturated fats are helpful in reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (good cholesterol). Good sources include nuts and seeds, avocados, olive oil and omega-3 fatty acid containing fish as wild caught salmon and mackerel.

Myth # 3 of a low cholesterol low fat diet

Drinking red wine to lower cholesterol

Yes and no. While studies show that drinking a glass of red wine can improve cardiovascular disease risk factor in women, drinking too much alcohol increase levels of triglycerides that are other harmful component of cholesterol overall. The best advice is to have a glass now and then if you enjoy it, but not to think of it as a cure for cholesterol.

Myth # 4 of a low cholesterol diet low fat

Fat and cholesterol are the only components of my diet that should be a concern to lower my cholesterol.

Absolutely not true! There is many other important factors in a diet that helps lower cholesterol. First and foremost, get plenty of fiber from a variety of sources such as fruits, vegetables and foods. In addition, consumption of fruits and vegetables (especially vegetables) will provide your body with a host of other nutrients in the form of vitamins and minerals that are important to overall health.
