Just put my best friend of 12 years to sleep, suggestions on how to cope?
I have been blessed with good health of all 10, yes 10 of my rescues, for over 15 years. Last night I had to put to sleep one of my most special best friends that has been by my side for more than a decade. He suffered from diabetes and lost his sight two years ago but his determination and ability to adjust was inspirational. He never let his handicap stop him from learning to live a happy life. He began to Loose Weight and we tried everything. Yesterday, he wouldn’t eat or drink. The vet assured me it wasn’t his diabetes and because of his age and his continuous Weightloss he most likely had cancer. He was so weak and tired I just didn’t feel like he should have to endure anymore insulin shots and I was afraid to leave him overnight on an IV and chance him dying in a strange place alone. I hope I did the right thing but it happened so fast and I only took him expecting to take some meds and come home. I wasn’t even prepared to hold him in my arms as he went to sleep.
You did the right thing, don’t second guess yourself. Your doggy had many aliments compounded by his age. Take comfort in the fact that you gave your dog the best life possible. I would have done the same thing, If I were in your shoes.
As far as coping with the loss of your dog, talk to your family and friends who knew about your special bond ; tell stories, bring out the photos. Once you fell better, how about creating a memorial for your dog, whether it’s inside the house or in your backyard. Pick a spot and get creative. I hope this helps.
